Fusion of Hyperspectral and L-band SAR Data to Estimate Fractional Vegetation Cover in a Coastal California Scrub Community

چکیده
A study was carried out to investigate the utility of airborne hyperspectral and satellite L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for estimating fractional coverages of herbaceous, coastal scrub, and bare ground cover types on the central California coast. Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) imagery collected in September of 2008 and Phased Array L-band SAR (PALSAR) (HH-and HV-polarizations) captured in April and July of 2008 were combined for vegetation cover mapping. produced by L-band SAR were fused together to generate a new feature space. We used global Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) linear regression to integrate and decompose the new feature space for fractional vegetation mapping. Ground measurements of fractional cover were collected from plots located within the U.S. Forest Service's Brazil Ranch study site for validation of the OLS model predictions. Significant linear relationships were found between fractional cover mapping from remote sensing and the ground-truth data. The estimation accuracy of fractional coverage mapping from remote sensing in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) was 17%, 12%, and 10%, for the herbaceous, coastal scrub, and bare ground covers, respectively. Decomposition results showed that textural information from L-band SAR strongly supported herbaceous and coastal scrub fractional mapping, while indices features from AVIRIS significantly improved mapping of herbaceous cover and bare ground.

Plant cover and vegetation structure were examined at two inland coastal sage scrub sites differing in fire history and use by California gnatcatchers. Salvia mellifera and Eriogonum fasciculatum dominated one site; shrub cover on gnatcatcher– occupied plots averaged 50 percent greater than on unoccupied plots. At the other site, gnatcatcher-occupied plots had high cover of Artemisia californic...

This is a preliminary report on a project to characterize the historic species composition of coastal sage scrub vegetation in southern California using plot data collected between 1929 and 1934 by the USDA Forest Service's Vegetation Type Map (VTM) survey. Records and maps from a large historic data set collected for the VTM survey were converted into a digital database and GIS coverage. Histo...
متن کاملChange detection in urban scenes by fusion of SAR and hyperspectral data
Urban areas are rapidly changing all over the world and therefore provoke the necessity to update urban maps frequently. Remote sensing has been used for many years to monitor these changes. The urban scene is characterized by a very high complexity, containing objects formed from different types of man-made materials as well as natural vegetation. Hyperspectral sensors provide the capability t...

The objective of the research presented in this paper is to investigate the benefit of fusion between hyperspectral data and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data for the classification of highly complex scenes such as urban or industrial sites. SAR and hyperspectral sensors are sensitive to different characteristics of the objects in the scene, i.e. hyperspectral provides information about surface ma...
